My study abroad experience in Taiwan was both academically and personally transformative, shaping not only my language ability but also how I understand and engage with different cultures. Through intensive Chinese language and culture courses at Chung Yuan Christian University in Zhongli, I was pushed to think, communicate, and adapt in an entirely new environment. The discipline of the program required me to step outside of my comfort zone daily, whether that meant speaking Mandarin in real-life situations or adjusting to unfamiliar routines. Outside the classroom, traveling to new cities, trying new foods, and navigating cultural differences firsthand helped me realize that culture is not something you simply learn, and that it is something you experience and interpret over time. These experiences strengthened my independence and adaptability, skills that I know will be essential in both my future career and personal growth.
A defining moment of this experience was participating in the Helping Hands Project at a local high school in Zhongli. This opportunity shifted my understanding of cultural exchange from something observational to something deeply interactive and personal. Engaging directly with Taiwanese students allowed me to see culture through their individual perspectives rather than broad generalizations. As we shared aspects of American culture and learned about their daily lives, I began to recognize how values like education, community, and discipline are shaped by cultural context. This experience challenged me to think critically about my own cultural assumptions and how I present my identity to others. It also highlighted the importance of listening, empathy, and open-mindedness when building cross-cultural relationships skills that will go far beyond the classroom.
Reflecting on this experience, I now see cultural understanding as a dynamic and ongoing process that will continue to influence my future. The ability to communicate across cultures, adapt to new environments, and build meaningful relationships will be invaluable as I enter the professional world, particularly in fields like international business and marketing. This experience has prepared me to approach global interactions with greater awareness and confidence, whether that be working with international clients, collaborating with diverse teams, or traveling in the future. More importantly, it has reinforced my passion for cross-cultural connections and shown me that some of the most meaningful learning comes from stepping into unfamiliar environments and embracing the perspectives of others.
Study Abroad - Taiwan
In the Summer of 2024, I studied abroad in Taiwan for two months at Chung Yuan Christian University 中原大学. During this time, I strengthened my Chinese language skills through immersive coursework while gaining a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.
Outside the classroom, I explored new cities, experienced local traditions, tried a wide variety of foods, and built meaningful connections with both local students and fellow international peers. This experience broadened my global perspective and deepened my appreciation for cross-cultural exchange.
Study Abroad Reflection
Internship
During my internship with the Clemson University Foundation, I worked as a Marketing and Special Events Planning Intern, where I supported event coordination and created marketing materials using platforms like Canva. I contributed to enhancing the Foundation’s visual and digital presence while gaining hands-on experience in nonprofit marketing, communication, and donor engagement.
See below a thorough reflection of my internship experience, while displaying my Chinese language skills.
Throughout all four years at Clemson, I have been actively involved in the Chinese Language Club, where I’ve had the opportunity to deepen my appreciation for Chinese culture outside the classroom. Through hands-on activities like crafts, games, and cooking, the club creates an engaging environment to explore traditions in a fun and interactive way. It has also allowed me to connect with others who share a similar passion for the Chinese language and culture, building a strong sense of community and lasting friendships.
Over the past two and a half years, I have built a strong presence on TikTok Live, where I’ve grown an inspiring and positive community while connecting with creators from across the country. Through consistent streaming, I’ve developed skills in communication, audience engagement, and content creation, all while creating a welcoming space for viewers. Being part of the Recapture Livestream agency has given me opportunities to expand this experience even further, including attending an in-person livestream event in Orlando, FL, where I competed in a livestream tournament, placing 2nd overall and was ranked #3 daily in the United States during the event.
Beyond the creative side, TikTok Live has also become a source of income for me, teaching me valuable lessons in consistency, branding, and audience connection. Managing my platform has strengthened my confidence, adaptability, and ability to think quickly in real-time situations. This experience has not only shaped my professional interests in marketing and digital media but has also played a significant role in who I am today. I will always be someone who values community, creativity, and building meaningful connections through shared experiences.
A snapshot of my life beyond the classroom, highlighting my involvement on campus, personal hobbies, and my working with social media as my job, which have all been experiences that have shaped me creatively and into the person i strive to be professionally in my future careers.
Outreach
Outside of my academic and organizational involvement, I have a strong passion for art, where I’ve been able to creatively incorporate elements of Chinese culture into my work. By combining my interests in both art and language, I’ve developed pieces that reflect cultural themes and influences. This passion has led me to participate in several competitions, where I have earned certificates of high merit recognition.
Pictured above, I have created a depictions of a Mid-Autumn Festival dinner, a year of the tiger themed piece, and a portrait of my friend Zoe immersed in the Chinese Lantern Festival
